Here are some insights to help you make your Pawa6 Round 4 picks.

Australia vs Denmark

Sudden death scenario in Group D

Australia’s win over Tunisia has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons. Mitchell Duke, the 31-year-old plying his trade in Japan’s J2 League for Fagiano Okayama, was the Aussie hero on matchday 2.

The Socceroos know that a point will secure qualification for the round of 16 if Tunisia fail to beat France in the other game. Nothing but a win for the Danes will do, but a team that’s ranked 10th in the world will back themselves in this pressure cooker situation.

Sevilla midfielder Thomas Delaney will miss the remainder of the tournament for Denmark so there’s extra onus on the tireless Tottenham man Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the centre of the park. His battle with the energetic St. Pauli midfielder Jackson Irvine will be pivotal.

A nail-biting evening lies in store for supporters of both these nations where goals may be at a premium.

Tunisia vs France

Fresh France faces on display?

Defending world champions France already have qualification sealed up and, unless they take a heavy defeat here, will win the group. Didier Deschamps may see this as an opportunity to rotate his squad and give minutes to a few fringe players, and he’s got considerably deep resources in that regard. We could see starts for the likes of William Saliba, Mattéo Guendouzi, Eduardo Camavinga, Kingsley Coman and Youssouf Fofana. What a luxury.

The Tunisians will have to take the shackles off and go for broke as only a win against Les Bleus would keep their slim qualification hopes alive. We could be treated to an expansive contest with goalmouth action aplenty.

Poland vs Argentina

Messi to surpass another Maradona milestone

Argentina’s shock defeat to Saudi Arabia set the tone for what has been a tournament of huge upsets delivered in Qatar. However, the Copa América champions responded in style with a timely 2-0 win against Mexico. Lionel Messi (who else) scored the opener from outside the box and he supplied the pass for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernández’s superb curled effort. Lionel Scaloni’s rugged Argentina side have now kept clean sheets in 8 of their last 10 matches.

Messi’s strike against Mexico was his eighth goal in 21 World Cup appearances, and that tally of 21 is the most by an Argentinian in World Cup history, shared with the late, great Diego Maradona. Another piece of history beckons. For the record, Messi already has the most caps (167), goals (93) and assists (53) in the history of La Albiceleste.

Robert Lewandowski, fresh off his maiden World Cup goal at the fifth time of asking, will be gunning to spearhead his Poland side to top spot in Group C. That’s the position they currently occupy, but things can quickly change on what should be a dramatic evening.

Canada vs Morocco

North Africans feeling at home

Morocco’s stunning 2-0 win over Belgium was the latest upset at WC22 and they’ll go into this Group F encounter full of confidence against already-eliminated Canada. Walid Regragui’s well-organised North African outfit are receiving plenty of support in stadiums, and they won’t be fazed by the climatic conditions either.

The Moroccans will qualify regardless of Belgium’s result against Croatia if they can get their side of the bargain done with a win. Canada were often exposed in their 4-1 defeat to Croatia, and Regragui will be eager for his team to convert the opportunities they will be optimistic of creating.

Croatia vs Belgium

End of an era for the Red Devils?

A 2-0 defeat to Morocco was a potential hammer blow to Belgium’s chances of qualifying for the round of 16 in Qatar. 7 of their 11 starters in that game were 30+, and 2 were 29. It feels as though we’re reaching the end of a cycle with this undoubtedly talented group of players. To that point, the likes of Youri Tielemans (25), Leandro Trossard (27) and Charles De Ketelaere (21) may all be vying for starts after being used as substitutes against Morocco.

It’s not as if their next opponents Croatia are exactly spring chickens though. However, 37-year-old midfield maestro Luka Modrić is as good as he’s ever been and 31-year-old Hoffenheim striker Andrej Kramarić is enjoying a renaissance in his career for club and country.

A draw is unlikely to be enough for the Belgians because that would leave them needing Morocco to lose to Canada by 3 goals or more.

This is potentially the most enthralling match left in this year’s group stage with so much on the line and a host of quality players ready to step up and be counted when it matters most.

Japan vs Spain

All to play for in Group E

After shocking Germany, Japan got handed a dose of their own medicine as they were upset by Costa Rica, a side that shipped 7 goals in their opener against Spain.

Spain’s thrashing of the Costa Ricans saw goals scored by 6 different players. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Germany, with Alvaro Morata grabbing his second strike of the tournament. The Atletico Madrid striker hasn’t started either of Spain’s matches so far but manager Luis Enrique must be considering it now.

Japan’s counter-attacking masterclass against Germany on matchday 1 should provide the blueprint for their tactics. After all, Spain enjoyed roughly 82% of the ball against Costa Rica, and around 65% against Germany.
